Effective 1 August 2024: Embargo on the transportation of dogs to the USA
Due to new restrictions imposed by the US authorities, it will no longer be possible to transport dogs to the USA on passenger flights starting 1 August 2024 until further notice. These restrictions apply to all dogs that are transported as carry-on baggage in the cabin (PETC) or in the cargo hold (AVIH).

For travel on/after 1 August 2024:
New PETC/AVIH bookings on affected Lufthansa Group airlines flights to the USA will no longer be confirmed as of 4 July 2024.
Existing bookings with a confirmed transport of a dog (PETC/AVIH/SVAN) to the USA for travel starting 1 August 2024 will still be honored provided all CDC regulations are fulfilled.
Dogs must
- appear healthy upon arrival
- be at least 6 months of age
- be microchipped
Important: The traveler must carry the CDC Dog Import Form Online Submission Receipt. This Import Form must be submitted prior to arrival at the airport via the CDC website. If travelers fail to present the confirmation (CDC Dog Import Form Online Submission Receipt) at check-in, the dog will be refused transportation.
Customers with an already confirmed booking of a dog to the USA can also rebook to another Lufthansa Group airlines flight or refund their ticket on an involuntary basis. Prerequisite: OS/SN/LH/LX/EN ticket stock. Please contact your Lufthansa Group Agency Support for this.
FThe transportation of assistance dogs (SVAN) remains possible under the new CDC regulations. For any bookings of assistance dogs to the USA, please contact your Lufthansa Group Agency Support.
The Lufthansa Group airlines are working hard to find a solution so that your customers can continue to take their dogs with them to the USA. Please note: It is still possible to have dogs transported to the USA as air freight, for example with Lufthansa Cargo, SWISS WorldCargo or with an air freight company specializing in animal transport.
